LOS ANGELES (AP) — A Los Angeles County sheriff’s recruit who was struck by an SUV during a training run last year has died, authorities said.Alejandro Martinez, 27, died Friday of injuries suffered Nov. 16 in Whittier, the sheriff’s department said.He was one of 25 cadets injured when a vehicle veered into about 75 recruits, from the sheriff’s department and several police agencies, who were running in formation. The SUV driver was identified as a 22-year-old man from Diamond Bar. He was initially arrested on suspicion of attempted murder of a peace officer but authorities later released him, saying more investigation was needed. The man reportedly said he was driving to work around 6:25 a.m. and fell asleep before his SUV veered into the wrong lane and struck the runners. His attorney said he has no animosity toward law enforcement and that it was a tragic accident. The group of recruits were escorted by two patrol cars as they ran in the roadway. BY ADAM BEAM | Associated PressSACRAMENTO — The largest dam removal project in United States history is underway along the California-Oregon border — a process that won’t conclude until the end of next year with the help of heavy machinery and explosives. But in some ways, removing the dams is the easy part. The hard part will come over the next decade as workers, partnering with Native American tribes, plant and monitor nearly 17 billion seeds as they try to restore the Klamath River and the surrounding land to what it looked like before the dams started to go up more than a century ago.The demolition is part of a national movement to return the natural flow of the nation’s rivers and restore habitat for fish and the ecosystems that sustain other wildlife. More than 2,000 dams have been removed in the U.S. as of February, with the bulk of those having come down within the last 25 years, according to the advocacy group American Rivers.Jamie Holt, lead fisheries technician for the Yur...49ers’ Drake Jackson eager to put added muscle to use at training camp

SANTA CLARA — With the 49ers sending an inside linebacker blitz Sunday, second-year defensive end Drake Jackson was compromised. When Elijah Mitchell circled out of the backfield to the left, it was up to the 6-foot-4, 273-pound Jackson to keep up with a 200-pound running back 25 yards downfield.“That just happens every time an inside linebacker blitzes and you’re in scat protection,” coach Kyle Shanahan said. “When the back goes, the D-end has to peel. When defenses call those blitzes, they’re praying that’s not the offensive play call and sometimes it happens.”Quarterback Trey Lance correctly identified the mismatch, and sensing a big play opportunity, let one loose for Mitchell. The pass was a bit of a wobbler, but it really didn’t matter because Jackson had stayed with Mitchell step for step. The ball fell incomplete.Much to the relief of Jackson.“That play, it just so happened I had to do what I had to do,” Jackson said...Russian ballistic missile strikes kill at least 5 people in Zelenskyy’s hometown in central Ukraine

Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who is running as a Democrat against President Joe Biden, tells many stories on the campaign trail about himself, his life’s work and what he stands for that are the opposite of what his record actually shows. The Associated Press found that Kennedy’s insistence that he is not anti-vaccine doesn’t square with his long record of opposition to vaccines. His claims that he is a true Democrat inheriting the mantle of his famous family are contradicted by his alignment with far right figures and support from Republicans. And despite listing the environment as a campaign priority, he has pushed bitcoin — a cryptocurrency that requires massive amounts of electricity from supercomputers to generate new coins, prompting most environmental advocates to loudly oppose it. Kennedy’s campaign is widely considered a long shot, but it’s gained media attention due to his famous name and the possibility that his run could weaken Biden ahead of what ...The FBI should face new limits on its use of US foreign spy data, a key intelligence board says

WASHINGTON (AP) — The FBI should stop using a U.S. spy database of foreigners’ emails and other communications for investigating crimes that aren’t related to national security, a group of White House intelligence advisers recommended in a report released Monday. The President’s Intelligence Advisory Board’s findings come as the White House pushes Congress to renew Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act before its expiration at the end of this year. U.S. intelligence officials say Section 702 enables investigations of Chinese and Russian espionage, potential terrorist plots, and other threats. But spy agencies also end up capturing the communications of U.S. citizens and businesses, and a series of intelligence mistakes at the FBI has fanned bipartisan criticism of the bureau that has strongly colored the debate over renewing the law. The advisory board says the FBI made “inappropriate use” at times of Section 702 information. Those include ...Viola Davis suspende el rodaje de una película por las continuas huelgas pese a la luz verde del sindicato SAG-AFTRA

HONG KONG (AP) — The discovery of a whale carcass in Hong Kong waters on Monday has sparked an outpouring of grief on social media, with many comments blaming the mammal’s death on sightseers. Many residents thought the dead mammal was the whale that has attracted groups of sightseers since it was first spotted in the city’s waters in mid-July. Compass Chan, scientific officer of Ocean Park Conservation Foundation Hong Kong, didn’t confirm whether it was the same whale. But he said an initial check on the dead whale found a new wound on its back, in addition to two old wounds. “It’s a pity,” Chan said at a media briefing. “If it really died, I think it’s a good chance to let everyone to think seriously how we should get along with other species in the nature.” Its cause of death would have to be confirmed by a necropsy, he said. After the carcass was found in the waters in Sai Kung — a district known for known for its hiking trails, beaches and islands —...Teamsters say Yellow Corp. is ceasing operations, filing for bankruptcy

Its expected liquidation would mark a significant shift for the U.S. transportation industry and shippers nationwide.“Today’s news is unfortunate but not surprising. This is a sad day for workers and the American freight industry,” said Teamsters General President Sean M. O’Brien. The Associated Press reached out to Yellow for comment on Monday. No bankruptcy filings were found as of the early morning. The company’s collapse arrives just three years after Yellow, formerly known as YRC Worldwide, Inc., received $700 million in pandemic-era loans from the federal...Hombre muere luego de que un árbol cayera sobre su casa durante una tormenta
