LAS VEGAS (AP) — Four of the eight Las Vegas high school students accused of beating their schoolmate to death in a brawl captured on cellphone video made their first appearances Friday in the adult court system. In separate hearings, the two 16-year-olds and two 17-year-olds were ordered to remain held without bail until their next court date on Tuesday, at which time the judge assigned to the case may reconsider granting bail. The students each face one count of murder but have not been formally charged, court records show. The Associated Press is not naming them because they are juveniles. The other four suspects are awaiting separate hearings since they are all under the age of 16.Earlier this week, Las Vegas police announced the arrests of the eight students, between the ages of 13 and 17, in connection with the Nov. 1 brawl that left 17-year-old Jonathan Lewis Jr. dead.Authorities have said students at Rancho High School in eastern Las Vegas had agreed to meet after school let ou...Teen sentenced to 30 years for killing 17-year-old in Brighton park

Cleanup efforts continued in a Miami neighborhood, days after the collapse of an abandoned building left the family living next door without a place to call home when debris pierced through their roof.Pile by pile, what was left of the crumbled building was scooped up and carried away on Friday. The abandoned structure was no match for heavy rain and wind that caused problems Wednesday night.Surveillance cameras captured the moment it came crumbling down. Some pieces came through the roof of Nicole Ojeda’s family home.“Yeah, I was sleeping, and then a loud noise, and when we go open the backroom, one of the bedrooms, the ceiling was caved in, and my younger brother was in there,” she said. Her brother was OK, but their home now has a huge hole in the roof. A sign now reads “unsafe structure” on the front. Volunteers with the American Red Cross were seen with the family on Friday to assess the damage and try to determine what’s next. Also nearby, longtime Miami-D...Crews extinguish house fire in Hialeah; no injuries reported

A victim and a suspect are dead after a shooting at a psychiatric hospital in Concord, New Hampshire Friday, officials said. The shooting happened at New Hampshire Hospital and drew a massive emergency response that continued into the night. In an update near 6:30 p.m., New Hampshire State Police Colonel Mark Hall said the suspect entered the hospital around 3:38 p.m. and shot one person in a lobby area. Hall said a state police trooper already at the hospital proceeded to shoot and kill the suspect. The entire incident was contained in the hospital lobby, according to Hall. While the shooting victim was given CPR and taken to nearby Concord Hospital, they were later pronounced dead. As crews swarmed the scene earlier Friday afternoon, New Hampshire Homeland Security and Emergency Management provided a series of updates. Around 5:30 p.m., the agency said all patients at New Hampshire Hospital were safe. “There is no active threat to the public,” the agency said.&...Grizzlies’ Marcus Smart to miss first game vs. Celtics due to foot injury

A powerful pro-Israel lobbying group is reportedly spending $100 million to remove the “Squad,” the super liberal cohort that includes Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Massachusetts’ Ayanna Pressley, from Congress next year. The bid by the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), reported first by Slate, is the most audacious move yet to target elected officials who strongly oppose Israel’s war against Hamas in response to the terror group’s surprise attack on the country last month.Pressley and the seven-member Squad are firmly ensconced in liberal Democratic territory and getting them knocked out won’t be easy.Several members of the Squad, including Reps. Cori Bush, Jamaal Bowman, Summer Lee and Ilhan Omar, already face Democratic opposition in next fall’s primary. But there has been no reported interest in another Democrat challenging Pressley, the Boston congresswoman who herself ousted longtime Democratic incumbent Michael Capuano to win her seat.Pressley’s 7th District incl...IBM and EU pull ads from Elon Musk’s X over concerns about antisemitism

Advertisers are fleeing social media platform X, formerly Twitter, over concerns about their ads showing up next to pro-Nazi content and hate speech on the site in general, with billionaire owner Elon Musk inflaming tensions with his own tweets endorsing an antisemitic conspiracy theory.IBM said this week that it stopped advertising on X after a report said its ads were appearing alongside material praising Nazis — a fresh setback as the platform formerly known as Twitter tries to win back big brands and their ad dollars, X’s main source of revenue. The liberal advocacy group Media Matters said in a report Thursday that ads from Apple, Oracle, NBCUniversal’s Bravo network and Comcast also were placed next to antisemitic material on X.“IBM has zero tolerance for hate speech and discrimination and we have immediately suspended all advertising on X while we investigate this entirely unacceptable situation,” the company said in a statement.Apple, Oracle, NBCUniversal an...Latest news
