Can Laurel make Main Street its ‘Main Street?’

Walk along Main Street in Laurel, Maryland, and you won’t see any shortage of vehicle traffic.A lot of cars drive up and down Main Street, but despite being lined with banks, churches and even some apartments, not to mention the MARC station at the end of the street, there just weren’t nearly as many people walking about as there were people driving.“It’s quaint. It’s small, but it’s not busy enough,” said Lauro Rodriguez, a barber on Main Street. As cars whirred by outside, he lamented that there are not enough businesses to make them stop and pull over.“You can’t even get a decent burger on this street,” Rodriguez said. Asked if Main Street was really Laurel’s Main Street — the principal street of a small town — he answered with no hesitation.“No. Far from it,” he said. “Route 1 is Laurel’s Main Street. That’s where all the businesses, all the restaurants — that’s thriving a lot more than Main Street is. The actual Main Street.”And Rodriguez said that’s bad for the city.Efforts to ...

DENVER (AP) — A judge has temporarily halted enforcement of a Colorado ban on what experts consider unproven treatments to reverse medical abortions at a religious clinic that alleged in a lawsuit that the newly signed law violated its Constitutional rights.Judge Daniel Domenico, who noted that Colorado is the only state to ban the treatment, issued the temporary restraining order over the weekend after Bella Health and Wellness argued that barring them from prescribing the so-called “abortion pill reversal” treatment violates their First Amendment right to free speech and religious exercise. How Colorado’s ‘make my day’ law differs from ‘stand your ground’ laws in other states The idea of reversing a medical abortion has become a flashpoint in the clash over reproductive rights nationwide after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, leaving abortion up to the states. Roughly a dozen states have passed laws in the preceding years compelling abortion providers to inform their pa...

The start to the third inning Tuesday was one that could have spiraled on Dean Kremer. After two no-hit innings, the Orioles’ starting pitcher allowed a leadoff single. Instead, the right-hander turned up the dial on his fastball, throwing 14 straight four-seamers and sinkers to strike out the side.Kremer didn’t allow another runner to get into scoring position as he continued his fastball-heavy approach, pitching 6 2/3 shutout innings in the Orioles’ 1-0 win over the host Nationals.Kremer (1-0) scattered four hits and struck out a season-high six batters — just two fewer punchouts than he recorded in his first 12 1/3 innings.
