This summer is a scorcher and we’ve got six sexy tips to help you cool down, whether it’s a block from the beach in the only green zone on the weather map at The Victorian or by getting a brain freeze at Piccalilli. In the 1970s, two of Santa Monica’s most iconic and historic Victorian homes on Ocean Avenue were lifted off their foundations and trucked down to the corner of Main Street and Ocean Park Boulevard, saving them from demolition due to development. One was the home built in 1894 for Roy Jones, son of longtime U.S. Sen. John Percival Jones, co-founder of Santa Monica. The other was the lesser-known and somewhat mysterious Kyte House, built around the same time and inhabited by the Southern California Masonic Lodges leader, Dr. George I. Kyte, and his family. They found their forever homes in what is now Heritage Square and were reborn as, respectively, the California Heritage Museum and a restaurant, the Victorian. Stinking Lizaveta Bring Anthems and Phantoms: What does that name mean? One day, we’ll have to ask them. For now, we can content ourselves with the technically dazzling and proggy metal that Philadelphia band Stinking Lizaveta offer to the world. They’re performing at the Knitting Factory NOHO on Friday, on a bill with the equally bizarrely named Telekinetic Yeti, and Somnuri and their ninth full length album, Anthems and Phantoms, is out now. Meanwhile, they released a video for the song “Shock” in June.“The audio and video are from a live performance, put together by Peter Wilder, featuring his brilliance.” said guitarist Yanni in a statement. “The riff was written by our bass player Alexi, it sounds like two electrodes being placed on either side of your head!”Of this tour, Yanni added, “We’re so excited to hit the road! The band is a fine tuned machine now. We can’t wait to rock with all the people that we haven’t seen in so long, ...Saweetie, YG, Tyga bring Klub Tour to Sacramento, San Francisco, SoCal

Published Fri, 22 Nov 2024 09:06:26 GMT
Universal Studios Hollywood is trying to fix one of its biggest recent mistakes. The park confirmed this month that it is building a “Fast & Furious”-themed roller coaster. The new, as-yet-unnamed roller coaster is taking over the space formerly occupied by the Animal Actors and Special Effects Stage theaters. There’s no opening date yet, but plans filed with Los Angeles County suggest that this will be crowd-pleasing Intamin coaster with multiple launches and inversions, like Universal’s recent Jurassic World VelociCoaster in Orlando. Inside sources also have teased that the coaster trains will rotate for a “drifting” effect, like the Vekoma trains on Walt Disney World’s recent Guardians of the Galaxy: Mission Rewind at EPCOT in Florida.Say what you will about its outrageous stunts and plot points, but Fast & Furious is one of Universal’s most successful franchises, and Universal Studios Hollywood has offered Fast & Furious attractions for years. We knew before we published a feature on cool “niche pizza” parlors — chicken curry-topped pizza places, or kid-friendly spots with craft brews for the adults — that readers would chime in, sometimes vociferously, about their favorites. So when you read these recommendations, imagine them all starting with the incredulous words, “You left this one off the list?!”Here’s the roundup of places to try from readers who are passionate about their pizza:Toto’s Restaurant & Pizzeria (San Bruno, Belmont, San Francisco): This Neapolitan classic from the Spadarella family dates to 1932 in Brooklyn and S.F.’s postwar years. San Jose reader Mike Schlimmer is a longtime fan. “When Toto’s San Bruno opened in 1972, my high school buddies and I would take early lunches to walk over to share a No. 2 (salami, mushrooms and sausage) or No. 3 (pepperoni, mushrooms and sausage). At the No Labels luncheon at the Puritan Backroom in Manchester, New Hampshire, on Monday, the punchline was hard to miss. A who’s who of failed moderate politicians and politicos, including former Sen. Joe Lieberman, former Govs. Pat McCrory and Jon Huntsman Jr., and former Reps. Fred Upton and Joe Cunningham, gathered alongside U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin. They were assembled to tout their political program in the form of a 73-page centrist manifesto outlining the path forward for a moderate American presidency. Neither press nor clergy were seen entering the private event, where, in a literal backroom, the fading stars of a puritanical third way met to further a plan that they have all but described as political blackmail.
