Read more Letters to the Editor.Up to us to keep Trumpfrom the White HouseRe: “Trump’s election plans include deportations, tariffs and mass firings if he’s reelected” (Page A8, Nov. 13).Anyone reading Donald Trump’s election plans should be quaking in their boots about the future of democracy.Seeking revenge on those who have gone against him should not be the main objective of a presidential candidate. Deportation of immigrants would destroy our economy as many of these people are laborers in jobs others wouldn’t ever want to do. As president, he alienated so many of our allies that his only backers would be Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong Un. Climate change solutions would be decimated and our future would be in the hands of oil barons. Those in this country who value freedom and the right to vote need to step up and voice their opinions, get involved in the election and ensure we do not have four more...

San Jose gets ready to skate, stroll and shop for the holidays

San Jose gets ready to skate, stroll and shop for the holidays We’ve all tried putting this off for as long as possible, but there’s no escaping the truth: The holiday season is upon us.And while that may herald a sleighful of stress for some, it also means a lot of fun annual activities are back, too. For starters, Downtown Ice is set to open for the season on Friday at 5 p.m. The ice skating rink at the Circle of Palms — between the San Jose Museum of Art and the Signia by Hilton hotel — was replaced by a roller skating rink last year, but the cold stuff is back, continuing a tradition going back to 1994 of letting San Jose residents pretend we have winter in California.Opening night may be a tad soggy because of the rain we’re getting this week, but the weather should be fine for the grand opening ceremonies on Monday evening. Barring severe weather, the rink will be open every day through January 15. Hours and tickets — $21 for a 90-minute session including skate rental — at sjdowntownice.com.ILLUMI...

Should the NHL keep going to Europe? For Sharks forward, it’s not even a question SAN JOSE – San Jose Sharks winger Fabian Zetterlund was 10 years old when the Detroit Red Wings came to his hometown of Karlstad, about a three-hour drive away from Stockholm, and played an exhibition game against Färjestad BK, a local top-tier team.Zetterlund attended that game and remembers the Red Wings — led at that point by Pavel Datsyuk and Nicklas Lidstrom, and fresh off back-to-back appearances in the Stanley Cup Final — badly outshining the hometown heroes in a preseason game.“They just played around with them,” Zetterlund said of the 2009 Red Wings, who won 6-2.Still, the game had an effect on a young Zetterlund, who aspired to play in the NHL one day. Eight years later, Zetterlund was drafted in the third round by the New Jersey Devils, and two years ago, on Nov. 18, 2021, at the age of 22, made his NHL debut.“I just thought it was so cool,” Zetterlund said of the 2009 game. “At that point, I was young and I was asking for sticks and everything. But now I̵...
