Alex Cora isn’t ready to announce his Opening Day starting pitcher, but he eliminated one significant contender on Sunday.Ahead of a split-squad day against the Orioles and Yankees, the Red Sox manager told reporters that Chris Sale will not get the ball on March 30.Apparently, that’s been the plan all along, and he clued his pitcher in a while ago.“I decided that like a month and a half ago, when we had that conversation,” Cora told reporters, including MLB.com’s Ian Browne. “[Sale] knows already.”Instead, the skipper says there’s “a good chance” Corey Kluber takes the mound for Game 1 of 162. Based on the spring training rotation, that would put Sale in Game 2.Still, Sale getting the first start could’ve been a storybook beginning to what he hopes will be a stupendous comeback season. After his August 2010 debut, the veteran southpaw made five Opening Day starts in the first 10 years of his career, including 2018 and 2019 ...

Logan Airport could get 4 inches of snow, while neighborhoods in the western part of the city may see more than 8 inches.“It’s certainly one of those classic nor’easters where the rain/snow line will be fun to figure out,” AccuWeather meteorologist Jake Sojda told the Herald on Sunday.“This doe...

Canada opens WBC with chaotic, mercy-rule win over Great Britain

PHOENIX – Teams line up rosters and map games out based on expectations of what should happen in the World Baseball Classic at their own peril. Time and again this tournament takes small-sample-size randomness and multiplies it by spring-training variance to produce utter chaos. As a result, the best laid plans don’t get torn up, they get shredded and burned with the ashes tossed into the wind. That’s how you get, for instance, Ondrej Satoria, an electrician by day who tosses high-70s slop by night, striking out once-in-a-lifetime talent Shohei Ohtani for the Czech Republic. Or the wild five-way tie in Pool A decided by the best quotient of fewest runs allowed divided by the number of defensive outs recorded. Or the hot mess that was Canada’s 18-8 mercy-rule victory over Great Britain on Sunday afternoon, quite possibly the best worst game you’ve ever seen.Nothing other than the end result went according to plan for the Canadians, who had to steel themselves through a Gong Show game ...

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A year after Will Smith strode on stage at the Dolby Theatre and slapped Chris Rock in the face, the Oscars are reconvening Sunday for a ceremony that will try to move past one of the most infamous moments in Academy Awards history. Stars are streaming down the red carpet — or, this year, the champagne-colored carpet — at the Dolby in Los Angeles. After several days of rain in and around Los Angeles, the sun is out again for a ceremony the Academy Awards are hoping is less stormy than last year.James Hong, co-star of best-picture favorite “Everything Everywhere All at Once” arrived with googly eyes on his tie, a reference to one of the film’s absurdist props. “It shows if you wait long enough, you’ll make it,” the 94-year-old Hong told ABC on the carpet. Some arrived already knowing their chances of winning were slim.“We’re going to lose tonight against a liar called ‘Pinocchio,‘” Antonio Banderas joked on the Oscars carpet. MANAGUA, Nicaragua (AP) — Nicaragua ’s government said Sunday it has proposed suspending relations with the Vatican days after Pope Francis reportedly compared President Daniel Ortega’s administration to a communist or Nazi dictatorship amid a crackdown on the Catholic Church in the Central American country. Relations between the church and the Nicaraguan government have been deteriorating since 2018, when authorities violently repressed antigovernment protests. Some Catholic leaders gave protesters shelter in their churches and the church later tried to act as a mediator between the regime and the opposition.Ortega branded Catholic figures he saw as sympathetic to the opposition as “terrorists” who had backed efforts to overthrow him. Dozens of religious figures were arrested or fled the country. Two congregations of nuns – including from the Missionaries of Charity order founded by Mother Teresa – were expelled last year, and prominent Catholic Bishop Rolando Álvarez was sentenced...
